Moving Donor Relations Forward: Addressing Unconscious Bias
Mitra Keykhah, Vanessa Harmon, and Maria Estrada
Thursday, September 22 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM (MT)
Unconscious Bias occurs when subconscious judgements and assumptions are made about character, intelligence or capabilities based on how one looks, speaks or behave. Unconscious bias is prevalent in all sectors, including donor relations, impacting and narrowing how we view professionalism, capabilities and talent. This issue reduces morale, prevents advancement, the ability to innovate, and contributes to attrition. We will discuss unconscious bias – how we may unintentionally perpetuate biases and how we have been on the receiving end of them. This will be a conversation where we discuss and share ways to name it, recognize it and honestly check ourselves on this important issue. This session will be held in a discussion format where folks will have the opportunity to learn and share from and with others.
Learning Objectives
-
Attendees will be better able to recognize and name unconscious bias.
-
Attendees will be given tools to help them navigate accountability and experience with unconscious bias.
-

Vanessa Harmon Director of Donor Stewardship The Nature Conservancy
Vanessa is the Director of Donor Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy, where she leads a team that develops personalized stewardship strategies and manages complex gifts for donors supporting the global priorities of the organization. She has designed broad-based, organization-wide stewardship programs for major and principal gift donors that have led to sustained and increased fundraising. This has been accomplished through creation of giving societies, named space recognition programs in capital campaigns, management of donor communications, leading strategic donor engagement events, and consultation on complex gift agreements and solicitation strategy. Maintaining best practices in donor relations and gift acceptance, Vanessa works to ensure donor intent aligns with organizational mission and values. She takes great pleasure in building and cultivating diverse teams to recognize philanthropic impact and generosity, while elevating the important work donor support helps to accomplish.
